Short supply chains and business partnerships

The BEES coop non-perishable product buying group currently works with some fifteen Belgian producers, for the most part directly, in order to bring their products to co-operators.

BEES coop intends to develop short supply chains in view of the mutually beneficial relationship that ensues: to ensure a lucrative price for producers while offering fresh and high quality products to co-operators at a reasonable price.

In this context, BEES coop is part of the CHOUD’Brussels project to set up a supply chain of local products in Brussels that is efficient and sensible for both the producer and the retailer.

Fair and accessible prices

BEES co-op is determined to support the local economy by favoring local and / or organic producers. BEES co-op intends to develop a fair price policy: prices that are as affordable as possible for consumers while properly remunerating the producer’s work.

The scope of possibilities

Stronger partnerships? Producers and BEES coop could jointly plan for crop production at the beginning of the season. This ensures a fair and guaranteed income for the producer and a quality product for the BEES coop!

Cooperators in the fields? One day, why not! The participation of members (similar to working a shift) at different stages of planting or post-harvest work could ease the work of market gardeners while reducing the price of products.

The role of producers in the General Assembly

BEES coop is a consumer cooperative. Nevertheless, in keeping with the desire to support producers, BEES coop guarantees them a voice and place in the decision-making process of General Assemblies through the option of subscribing to shares and joining the BEES coop community.

Labeling as a tool for transparency and awareness

BEES coop is optimising a clear and intuitive labeling system in order to be as transparent as possible about the quality and origin of the products on offer for members. This system allows cooperators to make informed purchasing choices.

The BEES coop labeling system is currently under development. The system will include information on the mode and conditions of production, origin and method of distribution.

Other awareness-raising tools such as culinary workshops, processing of vegetables or meetings with producers will also make it possible to inform the diverse membership of the coop about various issues and encourage them to support smaller-scale farming!

Choud’Bruxelles

Choud’Bruxelles is a joint research project of the GASAP network, BEES coop and Qalinca (ULB’s logistics research centre), financed by Innoviris.

The objective:

Reduce the environmental impact of deliveries in Brussels
To develop an efficient short supply chain delivery system in the Brussels-Capital Region
Reduce transport costs by maximizing logistics

How?

Via work upstream in the production chain
Via the implementation of a computer tool to analyze the current functioning of the supply chain
Via the development of software matching the needs of the different parts of the supply chain
